An updated version of my most popular tutorial, How to install Windows 10 in VirtualBox on your Mac! Hope you all enjoy! If you have not checked my first tut. When I asked him about this limitation of the M1 he said he didn't see it as an issue (not sure why) but that he hadn't yet looked into whether the open source virtual machine software VirtualBox would run on the M1, at least to run a Linux distribution (or distro as the cool kids say.).

4. x86_64 (or amd64 ) is the native processor name for the Intel/AMD 64 bit architecture. It is what your older system runs. 5. The only way to run x86_64 on an M1 is via 'double' emulation. First you would have to run a virtual machine on the M1 and that virtual machine would have to emulate the x86_64. VirtualBox works by virtualizing an x86 environment on an x86 processor. ARM virtualization does the same thing, for ARM operating systems. Due to the ARM-architecture it is currently not possible to launch virtual machines on M1 chips. This is not the case. VMs work on M1 Macs right now. There's no need to speculate about the future.

Virtual Box is a hypervisor. That is, it is an environment that can allow other Operating Systems to run inside. Some Mac Users who are running BOTH MacOS AND Linux are using a hypervisor to run ABOVE both, which allows free and easy switching between the two environments. Setup is NON Trivial. You may need to be a devloper, or think like one. Rosetta 2 is designed exclusively for user-mode programs and cannot cooperate with virtualization software to run arbitrary OSes in VMs. VirtualBox has no plans to port to ARM and will not work in Rosetta. None of this is negativity or cynicism towards M1 Macs - it's just the reality of how switching architectures affects virtualization. Answer (1 of 3): No. You could technically open the GUI, but the processor features needed by VirtualBox are not emulated by Rosetta 2, so you could not run any VMs.

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product To run a virtual machine on Apple Silicon currently Parallels, UTM and Docker support Linux ARM VMs. Parallels and UTM also support other OSs that run on ARM including Windows but not macOS. (This paragraph will change over time). M1 is an ARM-processor-based computer. Virtualbox is only based on x86 processors, and passes the x86-processor to the VM's OS. Virtualbox only makes x86-processor-based VMs. And ARM != x86. So the receiving M1 hypervisor also would have to emulate an x86 processor to run the x86 VM OS, not just pass the processor through like Virtualbox does.

I ask since Virtual Box does state on its home page that "VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use.". Virtual box and VMware have not yet started supporting the Apple M1 chip and spending 100$ on Parallels just for running a Kali VM is a waste, so learning this article will let you install Kali linux on UTM for free.

The new M1 is a different chip-set entirely (ARM), and as VirtualBox is not a CPU emulator there is no way it can run those existing images for you. Moving away from VirtualBox After researching the topic in-depth at the end of 2021, I felt had relatively few viable options.

Designed for macOS. Unlike other free virtualization software, UTM was created for macOS and only for Apple platforms. It is designed completely from the ground up for the new style introduced in Big Sur. UTM looks and feels like a Mac app with all the privacy and security features you expect as well.

Answer (1 of 23): First to your second question - yes, it is legal to run macOS (any version of it) in a virtual machine created by any virtualisation SW (e.g. VirtualBox or Parallels) provided that the virtual machine runs on Apple hardware.

You unfortunately cannot run VirtualBox on Macs with Apple's M1 chip. There's still no word on whether the free VirtualBox VM environment will ever be updated to run on Apple Silicon. You can try alternative: ParallelsDesktop. Creating a virtual machine is trivial on Linux and MacOS with Intel CPU (install VirtualBox and Vagrant). The same toolset no longer works on newer Macs with M1 CPU (VMware Fusion is in tech preview, so we're getting there), but there's an amazingly simple alternative: Multipass by Canonical.

Your main problem is not that it is a file but that the virtual machine file is an Intel based machine so can't run on a M1 machine. files can be read by VMWare and VirtualBox but the former can't run Intel VMs and the latter is not available on non Intel machines. You might be able to use UTM to emulate an Intel VM and that can load.
